Parenting an adopted child is both the "same as" and incredibly "different than" parenting a child born to you. Discussion of the core emotional issues of adoption and the interplay of
temperament issues will be linked to the behaviors that children exhibit. We
will address specific parenting theories and their usefulness and
applicability to adoptive family life. We will focus on practical strategies
for issues like celebrating birthdays, planning vacations, changing schools,
moving, divorce, graduation, rites of passage, holidays, adding or losing
family members, and other normal life events that have special resonance for
adoptive families. Workshop participant participation will be encouraged
with an emphasis on exploring specific family concerns.
